Fingers crossed it still gets him some attention though, because Boss Level's a hoot, and Grillo owns it.īoss Level comes to the UK as part of an Amazon Prime subscription, released on August 13th 2021.A very rich woman’s ex-lover sends her to jail forcing her to live with her former assistant. But this is Grillo's movie, through and through, and it was Grillo's shot at some more mainstream work, which is a real shame given the way things have evolved in the film - and world - landscape over the last few years.
Review the boss movie how to#
Naomi Watts is perhaps a touch miscast, and often feels a little confused about just how to play her straight role in this whole thing, but Mel Gibson, on the other hand, is having an absolute ball, delivering one of those once-in-a-movie speeches which only old vets like Gibson can deliver, and chewing up the scenery every damn chance he gets. well, repetitive, Carnahan mixes things up and keeps the engine going for a little bit longer, finding Grillo a committed participant in the craziness and a charismatic lead for this kind of trashy - but immensely fun - ride. And just when you think the intentionally repetitive formula is getting a bit. It's distinctly self-aware, making the schlocky, cheap cartoony effects only fit the videogame-inspired mould and keeping the action sequences pleasantly satisfying despite the clearly limited budget. Some of the biggest laughs come not only from finding new and imaginative way to take Grillo out, but from the occasional bits where he flips the tables on his bloodthirsty foes with just as much violent innovation. Carnahan gets the most he can out of such limited Short Film-on-repeat-esque scripting, spinning up increasingly crazy 'attempts' at making it through the same damn day, as he unleashes a colourful set of Smokin' Guns-like assassins to give our protagonist a really tough 24 hours. It's a wacky, frenetic piece, with director Joe Carnahan - whose small-scale work continues to impress even if his one blockbuster, The A-Team, didn't - revelling in the pulpy, video-game inspired approach to the piecemeal narrative.

Shot in 2018, Boss Level was a real chance at getting him some deserved attention.

He pretty-much single-handedly gave the Purge series a much-needed adrenaline boost and change of direction for the sequels Anarchy and Election Year, and was compelling in the underrated MMA TV series, Kingdom.

well, repetitive, Carnahan mixes things up and keeps the engine going for a little bit longer, finding Grillo a committed participant in the craziness and a charismatic lead for this kind of trashy - but immensely fun - rideįrank Grillo has been just as long overdue something approximating a shot at a mainstream career, beyond straight-to-video starring roles (Netflix's Wheelman and Point Blank, plus Beyond Skyline and the infinitely terrible Cosmic Sin) and higher profile supporting performances ( Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Warrior, The Grey, Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard). just when you think the intentionally repetitive formula is getting a bit.
